What is a Funko POP?

While Funko Pop is now a worldwide success, things weren't always so rosy for the US company. That's why in this article we'll also take a look at the history of Funko Inc., the company behind the popular Funko Pops.
The History of Funko Pops
Funko was founded in 1998 in America with the aim of making a wide range of different low-tech, nostalgic toys. Although the company ran into financial problems quite early on because their piggy banks did not sell, they managed to acquire the rights to Austin Powers. The Austin Powers bobbleheads were quite popular; a whopping 80,000 units were sold.
After the success of Austin Powers, vinyl figures of The Grinch and Tony the Tiger (known from Kellogg's Cornflakes) were also released, probably with the aim of evoking childhood memories. Eventually, Funko was sold in 2005 after which more licenses were obtained for different IPs.
2010: Funko Pop is born
It wasn’t until 2010 that Funko began selling the now hugely popular Pop! line. These figures were initially only sold at San Diego Comic-Con as a trial run. However, in 2011, they were also released through various retailers. The original Batman from the 1960s was the first iconic character to be released in this form, and as such, was given the #1 spot in the Funko Pop! line. In addition to Batman, the following new figures were also released:
-
Robin
-
Batgirl
-
Penguin
-
The Riddler
-
Joker
-
Superman
-
Wonder Woman
-
Green Lantern
-
The Flash
-
Thor
-
Loki
-
Count Chocula
-
Franken Berry
-
Boo Berry
The year 2010 can definitely be considered the breakthrough year for these collectibles. Not only was the immensely popular Funko Pop! line launched, but the first Glow in the Dark POPs were also introduced. Green Lantern #9 was the very first Glow in the Dark model and proved to be an instant success.
In addition, the first Chase Pop! was released in 2010. These so-called Chase Editions differ from the standard POPs in that the body has a metal coating. In addition, the packaging is provided with a special Chase Edition sticker on the front, which makes this edition extra popular among collectors.
Previously, the chance of getting a Chase Funko was 1 in 36, which greatly increased the collectibility of these Special Edition Funko Pops. As a retailer, when buying a large case, you only got 1 rare version, which increased the price for this version.
